When I was a kid, I experienced a lot of trauma and didn't have access to tools that could help me process these experiences. My teenage years were filled with being told something was wrong with me. That I was too sensitive. That I should just deal with it.
But our vulnerabilities, our hurt, our humanity and what comes with it are not something to simply be dealt with. I see them as opportunities; a call for us to challenge the narratives forced upon us, to get to know ourselves for who we are and the layers that makes us beautiful.
Through representation, relatability, and creativity, the cards confront harmful, ingrained narratives of dehumanization and assimilation, especially surrounding people of color. Each question is designed to be asked of us during times of stress, self-doubt and vulnerability. Through answering honestly, we "unstick" our thoughts and feelings from the moment and re-focus our energy on how we might care for ourselves and address our needs as unique individuals.
As we steadily grow and evolve through the use of our cards, so too must Cherished Parfait. New cards with new illustrations and targeted questions will be added to the deck.
Cherished Parfait emerged out of the program, Design for the Wellbeing of Black Women, created by Denise Shanté Brown and co-facilitated by N'Deye Diakhate. Design for the Wellbeing of Black Women is a hands-on healing experience in building self-recovery and transformation through design.
